2903 Final Reflection

Reflection

In the last couple of weeks I started the community service in Al Ain. I choose AL Ain because I live in Al Ain, and I can not be arsed to volunteer in Abu Dhabi due to the distance. I volunteered through out organization that was inspired by HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed. It’s called TAKATOF and it has branches around Abu Dhabi city, one branch is located in Al Ain where I decided to volunteer. I volunteered 5 times in Breast Cancer Event, Al Ain Disable sport Club, Blood donation, Collecting cloths and Winter Distributing Jackets. TAKATOF has a lot of volunteering types, and it always comes depending in the time of the year, that’s why I volunteered in 5 different Events unlike my teammates who volunteered in Abu Dhabi.

I had a lot of fun and interesting moments when I volunteered in Al Ain city. The best moment so far was in AL Ain Disable Sport Club, when we volunteered to play and entertain the disabled children there. We played football and them and then we played some small games at the club. The best moment is me experiencing what I call real volunteering, like for example interacting with the disabled children and learn about how they are disabled. And then getting to know them more. I can describe the experience that I had there, but I am so satisfied by volunteering there. The sad moment happened in the same day where the the children didn’t like the idea of us leaving after the games and I felt sad for them.

Everyday I say that my time in volunteering was worth the try. I learned and experienced many new stuffs, and more importantly I supported and improved my community with the donations, poverty, disables and cancer events. I learned that God gives and takes, if you think that X man have a better life than you, then look at the Y man who doesn’t even have a leg or cant walk extr and extra. I also learned how to get along with new people, since I spent all my life with relatives and neighbors.

To any student who read this, thank you for reading and I advise you to give the course a try. This course will help me overcome difficulties in life and also engineering wise.

TAKATOOF

Saturday 22/11/2014

4 hours from 9 am untill 1 pm

Near Al Bawadi Mall

For the fifth time volunteering, we ended up distributing the cloths and jackets that we collected last week
plus some new jackets we received from Red crescent. We gave the poor people of al ain, mainly asians ( indians,
pakistan) people. They separated us to 2 groups one was in the east of Al Bawadi Mall and the other in the west.
This time i met new people unlike the people i volunteered with last couple of weeks. There were some locals from
dubai and abu dhabi. It was really a honorable thing that we did helping the poor people, because all of us are humans
we should help each other, not only in UAE but everywhere in the world. The winter here is not that cold, but its for
poor people that dont have houses or even cloths to survive winter. So thats what we did to help them, giving them cloths.
this might be the last time i volunteer for the college, but it is not the last time to volunteer. Since i know how to volunteer
now i will make some plans in the future.

Thursday 18/11/2014

4 hours from 6 pm untill 10 pm

Al Bawadi Mall Parks

For the 4th time volunteering, they asked us to collect cloths and jackets for the poor people in al ain city. Our job
was simply to collect them and send them to the red crescent ( Al Helal Al Aahmr ), and red crescent is going to distribute
them to the people who are in need of it. We also gave our old cloths and family old cloths, and we merged them with the collection.
Some of us toke the cloths to the assemply points that the rred crescent made in many parts of al ain city, and the rest gave them to
Takatof truck's who was going to give them to red crescent. I really like volunteering, but volunteering to help poor people is what
i like the most about volunteering. It is good to volunteer orgnizing events, but helping people is more fun for me.

4 hours Volunteering 8 pm to 12 am

For the third time volunteering, our supervisor ( TAKATOOF Supervisor ) called us and asked
for us to volunteer for the Blood Donation Campaign. Our job was simple and easy, we just had
to prepare the donation bus at Al Ain Mall Parks, and to organize people who wanted to donate
and a part of our group went inside Al Ain Mall to attract people to donate and tell them how
important its to safe the lifes of other people in need of blood. I wanted to donate but i have
a lack of blood, and they told me to eat tomatos to get more blood hahaha.in the End i find that
many people want to donate but they didnt know about the bus, everyone donated young people, old
people, men and women. We also learned that donating blood is something healthier for our bodies.

Al Ain Sports club for Disabled.

For the second time volunteering we went to Al Ain Sports Club for Disabled. We had to take ideas and orientation in how to deal with disabled people in order for us to volunteer. At the first time we get there, we didn't get a long with them since they don't know us but after a while they got used to us and we had fun playing basketball, well i didn't bring any sport cloths so i was cheering for them instead. We had fun with them and they really had fun with us. We also sat with them and communicating with them while playing small games, at this time exactly we got a long with each other. When our volunteer ended, they really felt bad about us leaving and one of them hugged me( i swear ).

Volunteering Friday 31-10-2014 TAKATOOF(Al Ain)

Friday 31-10-2014 5pm to 9pm
Abdulla Awad Hoo280536
Volunteering with TAKATOOF in Al Ain Mall

This is my first volunteering with TAKATOOF. Many organizations and hospitals in al ain made a BREAST CANCER event at Al Ain Mall for the purpose of donations. We have been asked by TAKATOOF to organize the event from 5 pm until 9 pm. First we did meat with other volunteers such as us, and we got to know each other, then we discussed how to organize and we split the jobs in-between us. Some of us went to be Security Guards around the stage, others went to organize the seats and the stage requirements such as tables, seats, microphones and TVs. For me, my job was bringing the tables and TVs to the stage according to the type of event. The event had many parts, my part was to organize the question&answers event and also to give the prizes to the winners of the event. This was a very nice experience for me since it was my first time, and i feel proud of myself for serving the community. I know its just 4 hours but I am happy that i did it, i spent a good time being there volunteering and it was really fun to meet all the people there.

Sorry for the lack of pictures, we ended up busy organizing and we had no time to take proper photos.

Volunteering in different spheres of society

LSH 2903 – Community Service Learning

Week 4

Looking at volunteering in different spheres of society.

During the summer of 2012 the Olympic Games were held in London. David Moorcroft is a former athlete. At one point he held the world record for the 5,000 metres. David can be heard discussing the importance of volunteering the Olympic Games.
Zoe Hall is a lady who was one of the volunteers at the Games. She talks about the event and how important it was at the time as well as how much it has inspired her to continue working as a volunteer.

This link is about half way down the page.

Listen again and see if you can work out the answers to these questions about the interview:

1.                  How old were the Games volunteers? _____________of all ages__________
2.                  During the Games, the volunteers had a special title. What was this special title? ____________Games Makers_______________
3.                  Complete this quote from David… “… for a moment in time volunteering had a _________________profile_________ and an _______________images_______________ that they fully _______deserved_______________ but don’t always get.”
4.                  David mentions that some of the volunteers are semi-retired. What does this mean? ____________that they are working and having a free time________________
5.                  Zoe worked in Events Services. Where was this located?
_____________event series at the Olympic stadium ______________
6.                  How does she describe the experience of volunteering for the Olympics and Paralympics? ______Best experience in her life________________
7.                  What benefits of volunteering, according to Zoe?
a.       ______________fun________________
b.      ____________satisfication_______________________
c.       __________meet new people____________________
d.      ___________improve confident________________
8.                  Why does David feel that volunteering in the community is so important?
__________________help community and organizations that relies on the volunteering ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

This page is also from AGE UK.

What volunteer roles do the following people have?

Name
Job
1
John McArthur
Admin and information, to regain his self-esteem and confidence.
2
Samarah Hashmi
Survey analyst, the job provided her with extreme valuable work experience.
3
Oliver Stannard
Copywriter, enjoying the different experience.
4
Stanley Parker
Market drayton shop, he wants to help the less fortunate society.
5
Camilla Williamson
Not mention, she found it both interesting and useful.

Look again at these people and their jobs. What can you say about volunteering from the information in your chart?

They are all of all ages, the volunteering helped them meet new people and improve confidence and it was fun, interesting and useful for most of them.

Have a look at this page on the internet: http://www.worldvolunteerweb.org/browse/sectors/education.html

This page has some ideas about how people can volunteer through education projects.

Once you have read through the pages, you need to work in groups of 4 or 5.
In your groups, come up with a project which you think can be advanced through an educational setting. There are no restrictions, but your idea should be innovative and should aim at adding real value to the people you are trying to help.

As you are working through your project, one of you should be putting together a short presentation (Powerpoint, etc) to explain to the rest of the group what you are trying to achieve.

You should aim to cover the following points, at least.

1.                  What are the aims of the project
2.                  Who are the target audience, and why?
3.                  What activities would your project involve?
4.                  Who would be volunteering? Why?
5.                  What are the benefits your project could bring to the target audience?
6.                  How would you look into launching your project with reference to the relevant authorities in the UAE and in the country you have targeted?
7.                  What problems do you think you might come across and how would you try to get around them?

You should aim at one or two of your group making a 4-6 minute presentation to the rest of the group explaining your findings.

Maslow’s Human Needs Pyramid

Psychologist Abraham Maslow first introduced his concept of a hierarchy of needs in 1943. This hierarchy suggests that people are motivated to fulfill basic needs before moving on to other, more advanced needs.

http://thinkleftdotorg.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/dreamstime_m_16800829.jpg

As people progress up the pyramid, needs become increasingly psychological and social. Soon, the need for love, friendship, and intimacy become important. Further up the pyramid, the need for personal esteem and feelings of accomplishment take priority. Maslow emphasized the importance of self-actualization, which is a process of growing and developing as a person in order to achieve individual potential.

This hierarchy is most often displayed as a pyramid, as shown below. The lowest levels of the pyramid are made up of the most basic needs, while the more complex needs are located at the top of the pyramid. Needs at the bottom of the pyramid are basic physical requirements including the need for food, water, sleep, and warmth. Once these lower-level needs have been met, people can move on to the next level of needs, which are for safety and security

Types of Needs

Maslow believed that these needs are similar to instincts and play a major role in motivating behavior. Physiological, security, social, and esteem needs are deficiency needs (also known as D-needs), meaning that these needs arise due to deprivation. Satisfying these lower-level needs is important in order to avoid unpleasant feelings or consequences.

Maslow termed the highest-level of the pyramid as growth needs (also known as being needs or B-needs). Growth needs do not stem from a lack of something, but rather from a desire to grow as a person.

Five Levels of the Hierarchy of Needs

There are five different levels in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs:

1.     Physiological Needs
These include the most basic needs that are vital to survival, such as the need for water, air, food, and sleep. Maslow believed that these needs are the most basic and instinctive needs in the hierarchy because all needs become secondary until these physiological needs are met.

2.     Security Needs
These include needs for safety and security. Security needs are important for survival, but they are not as demanding as the physiological needs. Examples of security needs include a desire for steady employment, health insurance, safe neighborhoods, and shelter from the environment.

3.     Social Needs
These include needs for belonging, love, and affection. Maslow considered these needs to be less basic than physiological and security needs. Relationships such as friendships, romantic attachments, and families help fulfill this need for companionship and acceptance, as doe’s involvement in social, community, or religious groups.

4.     Esteem Needs
After the first three needs have been satisfied, esteem needs becomes increasingly important. These include the need for things that reflect on self-esteem, personal worth, social recognition, and accomplishment.

5.     Self-actualizing Needs
This is the highest level of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Self-actualizing people are self-aware, concerned with personal growth, less concerned with the opinions of others, and interested fulfilling their potential.
